How can we help?

Quick answers about your account, your projects and how Equi works out who owes what. If yours is not here, write to us at the end of the page.

Account and sign-in

How do I create an account?

Register with a username, your email address and a password, then confirm the address with the verification email Equi sends you.

  • A password needs at least 8 characters, upper and lower case letters, and a number.
  • You can sign in as soon as your address is confirmed.
I did not receive the verification email. What can I do?

Check your spam or junk folder first, then ask Equi for a new verification email.

  • Make sure the address you registered with has no typo.
  • If you try to sign in, Equi tells you the account is not verified yet and offers to send the email again.
  • Ten verification emails can be requested per fifteen minutes for the same address.
I forgot my password. How do I reset it?

Ask for a reset link from the sign-in screen by entering your email address.

  • If an account exists for that address, Equi emails you a link to choose a new password.
  • Check your spam folder if the email does not arrive.
I know my password. How do I change it?

Request a password email from your account settings.

  • Equi sends the same email it sends for a forgotten password.
  • The link in that email lets you choose a new one.
I cannot sign in. What should I check?

Check that your email address and password are typed exactly as you registered them.

  • Your email address also has to be confirmed with the link we sent you.
  • If you have forgotten your password, reset it instead of retrying.

Projects and invitations

How do I create a project?

Create one from your list of projects by giving it a name and an icon and choosing its default split mode.

  • A project is a shared space for one group's expenses: a couple, a flat, a trip.
  • You can invite people straight away or later.
How do I invite someone to my project?

Share your project's six-character code or its invitation link.

  • Someone who has the code enters it in Equi to join.
  • The link opens the invitation in Equi.
  • Equi can also email an invitation to the addresses you enter.
Why is an invitation link or code reported as invalid or expired?

That message means the code or link does not match a project that exists.

  • The code may have been typed with a mistake.
  • The link may have been cut off when it was copied or forwarded.
  • The project may have been deleted since the invitation was sent.
  • Joining needs an internet connection, so an invitation cannot be checked offline.
  • Ask the project owner, or whoever invited you, to send the code or link again.
Why am I asked to verify my email before joining a project?

Equi only lets accounts with a confirmed email address sign in and join projects.

  • Open the verification email we sent when you registered, checking your spam folder if needed.
  • You can also request a new one from the sign-in screen.
  • Open the invitation again once your address is confirmed.

How Equi works

Is Equi free?

Yes, Equi is entirely free to use.

  • There is no paid plan, no paywall and no premium version.
  • Equi carries no advertising.
  • Your personal data is never sold and never used for advertising.
  • Equi loads no third-party analytics or tracking.
What are the five ways to split an expense?

An expense can be split equally, by income, by parts, by percentage, or with a custom amount for each person.

  • Equal (50/50) divides the expense between everyone included.
  • Income splits it in proportion to what each person earns.
  • Parts gives each person a number of shares, such as 2 against 1.
  • Percentage splits it by shares that must add up to 100.
  • Custom lets you enter each person's exact amount.
  • The mode is chosen for each expense, and each project has a default that is offered when you add one.
I changed my project's default split. Why did past expenses not change?

Each expense keeps the split mode and the amounts it was created with.

  • Changing a project's default, its percentages or its incomes only affects expenses you add afterwards.
  • This is intentional, so that what was agreed at the time stays as it was.
  • To change an earlier expense, edit that expense directly.
How does the income-based split work?

Each person's share follows their income, so someone who earns twice as much covers twice as much.

  • You declare your income once in your account.
  • It is used in every project unless you override it in that project's own settings.
How do I record that I paid someone back?

Record it as a settle up.

  • Equi saves it as an ordinary expense in the Settle up category.
  • It is paid by the person who repays and credited in full to the person who is repaid.
  • It appears in the expense list and moves the balances like any other expense.
Why does Equi say I owe someone who never paid for me?

Equi does not track who owes whom expense by expense.

  • It adds up what each person paid and what each person owes.
  • It then shows a short list of transfers that settles the whole group.
  • That list can differ from who actually paid whom, but once every transfer is made, everyone is at zero.
Can I use Equi offline, and what does "Pending sync" mean?

Yes, without a connection you can still add, edit and delete expenses.

  • Equi keeps them on your device and marks them "Pending sync" until they reach the project.
  • When the connection returns they are uploaded to the project without duplicates.
  • Actions that need the server, such as joining a project, are only available online.
How do I control notifications?

Switch notifications on or off in your account settings, for the device you are using.

  • Equi notifies you when another member adds, changes or deletes an expense that involves you, or pays you back.
  • If you refused the permission when Equi asked, allow notifications for Equi in your device settings first.
Which currency does Equi use?

Amounts are currently shown in euros.
